OOC: About Moira Coombs

Name: Moira Evelyn Coombs

Age: 27

Creature: Witch

Favorite color: Lavender

Theme Song: Ready to Question by Gabrielle Aplin

About: Moira, at 27, is the oldest Coombs daughter, with twin sisters and a younger brother beneath her. Currently estranged from most of her family, Moira fell out with her mother over family pride and their involvement in the rivalry. Her father Anthony’s death served as the catalyst for this separation when Moira was 18. She loved her father dearly, who seemed to Moira to be a good man, and even nearly ten years later, she still misses him.

She believes in doing what is right above all else, and her morals ultimately clash with those held by her mother, Violet, who revels in her family’s history, wielding her fame like a weapon whenever she so chooses. Violet’s cold reaction to her own husband’s death opens Moira’s eyes as to the true nature of her own mother, a truth that deeply frightens Moira. Moira fears succumbing to the pride that helped cause the rivalry to begin with. That said, she still loves and cares deeply for her siblings, and will do anything to protect them as much as she can.

Moira is what her friends refer as a “stubborn idealist.” She believes in the best of people and wants to achieve peace in Siren’s Cove. She also has her own ways of going about getting that peace, and can be rather “goat like,” according to anyone who’s observed her in debate. She does tend to get heated in arguments, but she means well. Sometimes, it takes her awhile to realize her own faults, but she harbors a determination to always set things right and will usually seek to make amends. The obvious exception to this is her mother, who both terrifies and angers Moira in equal amounts.

At age 18, as the eldest Coombs child, Moira inherited the Coombs & Co. apothecary as a part of her father’s will, much to her mother’s indignation. Upon obtaining the business, Moira placed countless protection and defense charms to ward off her mother and anyone else looking to harm others with their magic. Moira owns, manages, and works at Coombs & Co. to make her living. With so much on her mind, she tends to be a messy person, though she always makes sure the apothecary is up to snuff. She looks on the apothecary as something like her baby and one of the last remaining connections to her father, who managed the shop before her.

Beneath the apothecary lies the tavern, which Moira does not own but does often utilize for meetings with the small group of ‘rebels,’ so to speak, she’s gathered to fight for peace in Siren’s Cove. A group that attempts to include all of the supernatural and human groups in town, they meet in secret so as to escape the watchful eyes of the remaining Coombs family and the Thorntons family who still uphold the values of the rivalry.

Growing up a Coombs, the rivalry seeped into all of Moira’s bedtime stories. Much to her mother’s dismay and father’s delight, Moira never caught on to the feverish fascination with Vivian Coombs. Indeed, she tried to avoid it whenever she could as a child, but ultimately could never escape it. Since leaving her childhood home, her disdain for the rivalry increases daily.
She dresses for comfort over style, favoring jeans, skirts, and peasant blouses over anything more formal, though she does own a couple fancy dresses, from when she still adhered to her mother’s rules. She’s no longer rich, but she’s not struggling to make ends meet, either. Her lifestyle perfectly suits her as much as it angers her mother.

She spends most of her days in the apothecary and a lot of her free time by the sea, which is where she is happiest. She does enjoy other spots around town, however. She grabs her morning coffee and usually takes her lunches at the Quill; she loves walking along the boardwalk. She also loves poking around for new magic spells to try in various book and magical specialty stores.

Moira also happens to be openly bisexual. Busy as she is, Moira does not actively seek romance out, but she isn’t opposed to it, either.

As a lover of all things water, Moira specializes in water magic, such as divination through sea water, herbology, and transfiguration spells. She can currently transform herself into a cat at will, and is working on mastering a dolphin form so as to explore the ocean more. She also keeps in contact with the sirens in Siren Cove, to keep them informed of happenings in the town, especially those that do not make the local paper.

Ultimately, Moira navigates life through her magic, her dreams, of which she has many, and her surprising sense of humor, which she sometimes uses to cover up her own insecurities. She considers herself like sea water; always in motion, salty on the surface, and full of unexplored potential.
